Upward Bound

The Upward Bound Program at WCC is a college prep program designed to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from college. The Upward Bound program serves 57 high school students in grades 9 through 12 from George Wythe High School, Rural Retreat High School, Ft Chiswell High School, Carroll County High School, Galax High School, and Marion Senior High School.

During the Academic Year, students will meet with an Upward Bound advisor monthly in their schools to receive academic, career, and college guidance. In addition, students have access to tutoring, college tours, overnight trips and various cultural experiences. 

Upward Bound hosts an annual Summer Enrichment Program where students take classes focusing on math, science, English, and foreign language. Classes are small, and students get one-on-one attention. Courses tend to be hands-on and experiential. Furthermore, Upward Bound's summer classes are designed to inspire excitement about academics and to give students a head start on their upcoming academic year. Students are offered guidance in educational and career opportunities, as well as exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote leadership, cultural awareness, and self-confidence. 

WCC Upward Bound is 100% funded by the US Department of Education through a competitive grant competition.

All participants must be a U.S. Citizen, attend one of the target high schools listed above, have completed 8th grade, be either a first-generation college student or meet income guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Education, be working toward an Advanced Studies Diploma, and have a desire to go to college.
